Black Harbor is a Shopify application that provides merchants with a centralized workspace for product sourcing, catalog analysis, product preparation, content optimization, merchant review, and publishing.
This documentation describes Black Harbor's primary components, workflows, departments, data handling, and operational behavior.
1. Black Harbor Overview
Black Harbor operates as a digital commerce headquarters inside Shopify Admin.
Rather than treating product sourcing, optimization, merchandising, store analysis, and publishing as disconnected tasks, Black Harbor organizes them into coordinated workflows.
The application is built around three principles:
Specialized work — Different Black Harbor departments handle different responsibilities.
Coordinated results — Department findings are brought together into a unified assignment.
Merchant control — Important results are presented for review so the merchant can make the final decision about what reaches the store.
Black Harbor's primary areas include:
- Harbor Square
- Assignments
- Departments
- Store Intelligence
- Results & Approval Center
- Activity
- Plans & Upgrades
- Settings
2. Harbor Square
Harbor Square is the main Black Harbor dashboard.
It provides a centralized view of the merchant's Black Harbor workspace and highlights information that may require attention.
Depending on available data and activity, Harbor Square may display:
- Store Health
- Products analyzed
- Active assignments
- Assignments awaiting review
- Store Intelligence findings
- Recommended opportunities
- Recent workforce activity
- Executive recommendations
Harbor Square is intended to answer a simple question:
What deserves my attention next?
3. Assignments
Assignments are the primary unit of structured work in Black Harbor.
A product assignment begins with source information provided by the merchant and progresses through applicable Black Harbor departments.
An assignment maintains the information and results associated with that workflow so merchants can review the completed package rather than coordinating each task independently.
Assignment information can include:
- Source information
- Product information
- Images
- Variants
- Inventory information
- Product details
- Department findings
- Optimized content
- Recommendations
- Readiness information
- Merchant approvals
- Publishing status
4. Product Sources
Black Harbor can process supported product sources submitted through the assignment workflow.
Source information available to Black Harbor depends on what the source makes publicly available and what Black Harbor can reliably retrieve.
Depending on the source, Black Harbor may identify information such as:
- Product title
- Description
- Vendor or brand
- Product type
- Product images
- Product variants
- Selling price
- Compare-at price
- Supplier cost when reliably available
- Inventory or availability information
- Weight
- Barcode
- Product details
Not every source exposes every field.
Black Harbor distinguishes between information that was successfully obtained and information that could not be reliably determined rather than intentionally inventing missing source data.
5. Shopify Product Workflows
Black Harbor can work with information from a merchant's existing Shopify catalog.
This allows merchants to use Black Harbor not only for new product opportunities but also for improving products already present in their store.
Available workflows may analyze or prepare information involving:
- Titles
- Descriptions
- SEO metadata
- Images and image information
- Variants
- Inventory
- Product organization
- Publication readiness
- Merchandising opportunities
6. Store Intelligence
Store Intelligence analyzes available Shopify catalog information and surfaces potential opportunities.
Findings may be prioritized according to their significance so merchants can focus on higher-impact catalog issues first.
Examples may include:
- Missing or weak descriptions
- SEO title opportunities
- SEO description opportunities
- Missing image alt text
- Pricing information requiring review
- Product merchandising opportunities
- Other catalog-quality findings
Store Intelligence findings are recommendations and diagnostic information.
They do not guarantee increased sales, traffic, conversion rates, or search-engine rankings.
7. Black Harbor Workforce
Black Harbor uses a specialized digital workforce to divide commerce work into focused responsibilities.
A department receives the information relevant to its role, performs its portion of the assignment, and returns structured results to the Black Harbor workflow.
This allows the final assignment to combine multiple perspectives rather than relying on a single generalized process.
8. Scout — Product Intelligence
Scout handles source-product intelligence.
Scout's role is to inspect the product source and capture reliable product information that can be used by subsequent departments.
Depending on source availability, Scout may collect:
- Product title
- Description
- Images
- Variants
- Pricing information
- Compare-at pricing
- Supplier cost
- Inventory or availability information
- Product details
- Weight
- Barcode
- Other available source attributes
When information cannot be reliably determined, Scout may leave the corresponding field unavailable rather than fabricate a value.
9. Vision — Visual Intelligence
Vision evaluates available product imagery.
Vision can analyze technical and merchandising characteristics of imported images and help identify stronger candidates for product presentation.
Analysis may include factors such as:
- Image dimensions
- Aspect ratio
- Resolution
- Brightness
- Sharpness
- Duplicate images
- General technical quality
- Hero-image suitability
Vision may recommend a preferred hero image from the available source imagery.
Image analysis does not determine whether the merchant has legal rights to use an image. Merchants remain responsible for verifying image usage rights.
10. Echo — Content & SEO
Echo specializes in merchant-facing product content.
Depending on the workflow, Echo may prepare:
- Optimized product titles
- Product descriptions
- Vendor or product-type recommendations
- Product tags
- SEO titles
- Meta descriptions
- SEO-friendly handles
- Keyword guidance
- Blog content
- Social content
- Promotional copy
Echo can also assist with individual Store Intelligence findings involving product descriptions and SEO information.
AI-generated content should always be reviewed by the merchant before publication.
11. Ledger — Pricing Intelligence
Ledger evaluates available product pricing information.
Depending on the source data, Ledger may consider:
- Source price
- Compare-at price
- Supplier cost
- Candidate retail price
- Estimated gross profit
- Estimated gross margin
- Markup
- Advertised discount information
Supplier Cost Requirements
Reliable supplier cost is required for meaningful profitability calculations.
If supplier cost is unavailable, Ledger may preserve available retail pricing information while withholding calculations that would require an unsupported cost assumption.
Black Harbor does not intentionally invent supplier cost merely to produce a margin percentage.
Profitability Estimates
Ledger calculations are product-level estimates.
Unless explicitly stated otherwise, they do not necessarily include:
- Shipping
- Payment-processing fees
- Advertising
- Returns
- Taxes
- Duties
- Marketplace fees
- Labor
- Business overhead
- Other merchant expenses
Merchants should perform their own financial analysis before making pricing decisions.
12. Beacon — Readiness & Quality Review
Beacon evaluates whether the available product package is sufficiently complete for the next stage of the workflow.
Beacon can identify:
- Blocking issues
- Warnings
- Passed checks
- Missing information
- Content-quality concerns
- Image concerns
- SEO concerns
- Supplier-cost limitations
- Variant availability
- Other readiness findings
Beacon may also provide a readiness score.
A readiness score is a workflow aid and does not guarantee commercial, legal, or financial success.
13. Horizon — Strategy & Opportunities
Horizon evaluates the completed product information for realistic merchandising and growth opportunities.
Recommendations can involve areas such as:
- Merchandising
- Product positioning
- Content opportunities
- Catalog opportunities
- Promotional opportunities
- Product presentation
- Other merchant actions supported by available information
Horizon is instructed to base recommendations on available assignment information rather than unsupported product claims.
14. Sage — Business Intelligence
Sage reviews the combined work completed by the preceding departments and translates the findings into practical merchant guidance.
Sage may provide a recommendation such as:
- Approve
- Approve with changes
- Hold
Sage can also identify:
- Required actions
- Non-blocking recommendations
- Important findings
- Remaining concerns
The merchant remains responsible for the final business decision.
15. Atlas — Executive Coordination
Atlas provides the final coordinated executive briefing.
Atlas reviews the completed specialist work and presents the merchant with a consolidated view of the assignment.
Atlas results can include:
- Executive headline
- Executive summary
- Readiness recommendation
- Key wins
- Attention items
- Recommended next actions
Atlas is intended to reduce the need for merchants to interpret every specialist result independently.
16. Results & Approval Center
The Results & Approval Center is the merchant review workspace for completed assignments.
Available sections may include:
- Executive Summary
- Optimized Product
- Images
- Variants
- Inventory
- Additional assignment results
The interface may also display:
- Approval readiness
- Technical readiness
- Approved sections
- Remaining sections
- Unresolved findings
- Department recommendations
Merchants should review the available information before approving or publishing an assignment.
17. Approval Workflow
Black Harbor separates preparation from merchant approval where supported by the applicable workflow.
Merchants may approve individual assignment sections after reviewing them.
Where available, Approve everything allows all eligible sections to be approved together.
Approval indicates that the merchant has reviewed and accepted the applicable prepared work.
Merchants should resolve important warnings and verify product information before final approval.
18. Publishing
Black Harbor can publish supported, merchant-approved product information to Shopify.
Publishing may involve creating or updating applicable Shopify content depending on the workflow.
Before publishing, merchants should verify:
- Product accuracy
- Supplier reliability
- Product availability
- Product cost
- Selling price
- Product descriptions
- Product claims
- Images and image rights
- Variants
- Inventory information
- SEO information
- Intellectual property considerations
- Applicable laws and Shopify policies
Black Harbor assists with product preparation and publishing workflows but does not replace merchant review.
19. Blog Content
Supported Black Harbor assignments may prepare blog content associated with a product or merchandising opportunity.
Where publishing functionality is available, merchant-approved blog content can be created within the merchant's Shopify environment.
Merchants should review all generated articles before publication.
20. Social Content
Black Harbor may prepare social or promotional content associated with an assignment.
Where a downloadable social package is available, merchants can retrieve the prepared assets for use in their own marketing workflow.
Black Harbor does not automatically publish content to an external social network unless the application explicitly provides and identifies that functionality.
21. Activity History
The Activity area provides visibility into Black Harbor workforce activity.
Activity records can help merchants understand what occurred during an assignment or within the application.
Depending on the activity, records may identify:
- The department or actor
- The action performed
- Assignment information
- Status information
- Relevant timestamps
22. AI-Generated Results
Some Black Harbor departments use artificial intelligence to analyze information or generate merchant-facing results.
AI-assisted outputs can include content, recommendations, classifications, summaries, or strategic guidance.
AI-generated results can occasionally be incomplete or incorrect.
Merchants should independently review important information before relying on it for:
- Product claims
- Pricing decisions
- Legal compliance
- Supplier decisions
- Financial decisions
- Intellectual property decisions
- Publication
Black Harbor is designed to assist merchant decision-making, not replace it.
23. Inventory & Availability
Inventory and availability information depends on the information exposed by the applicable product source or Shopify store.
When reliable inventory quantities are available, Black Harbor may display them.
When only availability status can be determined, Black Harbor may indicate that the product appears available without claiming an unsupported quantity.
When inventory cannot be reliably determined, the information may be marked unknown.
24. Reviews
Review information depends on the capabilities and availability of the applicable product source.
A source may display reviews to a visitor without exposing them in a format Black Harbor can reliably import.
When reviews cannot be reliably retrieved, Black Harbor should not represent those reviews as successfully imported.
Review capabilities may evolve as Black Harbor adds or improves supported source workflows.
25. Third-Party Sources
Black Harbor may allow merchants to submit product information or URLs from third-party sources.
Black Harbor is not the manufacturer, seller, supplier, or fulfillment provider for independently sourced products.
Third-party product information can change without notice.
Merchants are responsible for independently verifying:
- Supplier legitimacy
- Product availability
- Product quality
- Shipping terms
- Return policies
- Supplier pricing
- Intellectual property rights
- Product safety
- Regulatory requirements
- Applicable marketplace and Shopify policies
26. Data & Permissions
Black Harbor requests Shopify permissions necessary to provide its supported functionality.
Depending on current features, permissions may allow Black Harbor to work with areas such as:
- Products
- Content
- Inventory
- Locations
- Publications
Black Harbor's permissions may change as features evolve.
If additional Shopify permissions become necessary, merchants may be required to approve those permissions through Shopify.
For additional information regarding data handling, see the Black Harbor Privacy Policy.
27. Troubleshooting
An assignment appears to have stopped
Review the assignment's current status.
If Black Harbor provides a retry option, use the available retry control.
If the problem continues, contact Black Harbor Support and provide the assignment reference and a description of the issue.
A source field is missing
Some product sources do not reliably expose every field.
A missing value does not necessarily indicate an application failure.
Black Harbor may intentionally leave a value unavailable when the source information cannot be reliably determined.
Ledger cannot calculate margin
Ledger requires reliable supplier cost before it can calculate meaningful product-level gross profit and margin.
If supplier cost was not available from the source, profitability calculations may remain unavailable.
Store Intelligence doesn't show an expected issue
Refresh the applicable store information and confirm that the product data has been saved in Shopify.
Store Intelligence findings depend on the information available to Black Harbor during the analysis.
Product reviews were not imported
Reviews can be presented differently across product sources. A visible review section does not necessarily mean the review information is available in a format Black Harbor can reliably retrieve.
A retry succeeded after an initial failure
Temporary network, source, or processing conditions can occasionally interrupt a request.
If a retry succeeds and the resulting assignment information is complete, continue reviewing the completed results normally.
